Land & Legacy – The Evolving Story of the Mines of Spain Fifty years ago, the EB Lyons Interpretive Center was established to help people connect with the natural and cultural history of this remarkable place, inspiring generations of visitors, families, and students through its exhibits and programs. Today, with the support of our community, the Friends of the Mines of Spain and Dubuque County Conservation are building the next chapter of that story through Land & Legacy: The Evolving Story of the Mines of Spain, a new permanent exhibit that will transform the Interpretive Center and bring to life the full story of this landscape – from Indigenous stewardship to modern conservation. Our Goals: Support the decisions at the Mines of Spain, Inform the public about the benefits of the Mines of Spain, Assist park by volunteering, Locate funding and materials for projects, Encourage others to enjoy the Mines of Spain, Assist in educational programs.
In support:
“This proposed exhibit will significantly enhance the visitor experience by providing cohesive, high-quality interpretation that connects the area’s Indigenous stewardship, settlement history, land-use changes, and modern conservation efforts. By offering deeper context and storytelling, this project will encourage longer visits, greater engagement, and a stronger sense of place for both residents and visitors. From a tourism perspective, investments in interpretation and educational infrastructure strengthen Dubuque County’s identity as a destination rooted in authentic experiences, environmental stewardship, and cultural heritage. The Land & Legacy exhibit aligns closely with Travel Dubuque’s mission to promote attractions that enrich visitor understanding while supporting sustainable tourism.” — Excerpt from a letter of support from Travel Dubuque
