The Mines of Spain was selected as a Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Site. This designation says that MOS has a special story to tell about agriculture and its history as part of agricuture in the making of America. You may want to check out this site to discover what Silos and Smokestacks is about. There is a sign on Highway 20 when you come into Iowa from Illinois
Iowa Audubon
Mines of Spain Recreation Area was just nominated as an Important Birding Area [IBA], This means that MOS has excellent habitat for nesting, migration stops, wintering over etc for endangered and threatened species of birds.

This site is for the Iowa Ornithological Union, it has information on birding, what is going on in Iowa, checklists, reports etc. Plus they have further information on IBA.
