Volunteers in Natural Resources Banquet

At the annual Iowa Department of Natural Resources Volunteer Awards Banquet in Des Moines on November 18, 2006 the Friends of the Mines of Spain received the Outstanding Group Volunteer Award.   To qualify or be nominated for this award the group needed to stand out in terms of accomplishments over time; exceptional successes with recruitment and membership numbers; partnerships; sponsoring successful events; etc.

The members of the Friends of the Mines of Spain are honored for the thousands of hours they contribute on a yearly basis to a variety of projects and initiatives at the park. Their contributions include staffing and providing programs at the interpretive center, completing park maintenance projects, natural areas restoration, and fundraising for various initiatives, the most recent being a $1.5 million campaign to add 6,300 square feet onto the existing interpretive center. This group currently has 152 members and 17 supporting partners including the City of Dubuque, Loras College, Boy and Girl Scouts, University of Dubuque, Audubon Society, Dubuque Community Schools, and the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium.

The award was presented to Jerry Reisinger, District Parks 2 Supervisor.  Jerry accepted the award for the Friends of the Mines of Spain.  He presented the award to the group and is displayed at the E. B. Lyons Interpretive Center.

Other volunteers were nominated for youth and adult awards.  All received certificates of appreciation for volunteering at the Mines of Spain Recreation Area.  Those nominated and their projects and time include.

This is the second time the Friends of the Mines of Spain has received this award. They first received this honor in 2003 at the first annual DNR Keepers of the Land Awards Banquet.
