The park is open year-round, with park hours of 4 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
The interpretive center is open year-round with limited
hours. It is open 9-4 Monday thru Friday and 12 noon to 4:30 on Saturday
and Sunday. We are open the July 4, Memorial and Labor Day holidays.

Sunday Programs: for all ages, free
2008 Summer Sunday Program Schedule: All programs are at the E. B. Lyons Interpretive Center unless otherwise stated. The center will be open from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and the program will start at 1:00 p.m. and run for about one hour.
Nature Day For Kids (elementary ages 5-11) Free

May 10 - All about spring
Celebrate Mother’s Day by learning all about Mother Nature’s spring time activities.
May 17 - Archeology
Have you ever wondered what an Archeologist does? Learn about these scientists by becoming a Mines of Spain archeologist!
May 24- BIRDS!
Bird watching is a fun activity anyone can do! Learn about these special critters by learning what they look like, how they talk to each other, and even making your own binoculars
May 31 - Scavenger Hunt
Use your observation skills and the help of an adult friend as we hunt for signs of nature around the Interpretive Center.
June 7 - Reptile Romp
What’s the difference between amphibians and reptiles? Why do snakes stick their tongues out at people? Discover the answer to these questions and more as we learn about these slippery animals.
June 14 - Father/Child Program- Creek Stompin’
What’s better then getting muddy with your male relatives? Join us as we stomp through Granger Creek to find BMI’s.
June 21 - It’s finally summer!
Celebrate the long awaited summer by meeting the nature center’s animals and a nature hike.
June 28- Habitat, habitat, a forest is a habitat!
A habitat is a very special place; it’s where all the animals are at! Learn about all the special homes animals make at the Mines of Spain.
July 12 - Animal Tracks- Who just passed by?
Animals are sneaky creatures that leave us clues about who’s just gone through an area. Please bring a solid light colored t-shirt to make your own track ID shirts!
July 19 - Prairies
Prairies used to cover 99% of Iowa, now they only over about 1%. Activities will include planting your own prairie, wondering through a prairie and learning about animals that live there.
July 26 - Critter Connection- Food Webs
All animals are connected in some way. Learn through games and crafts how every living thing is connected.
August 2 - Here Fishy, fishy, fishy.
Grab your fishin’ pole, some bait and let’s go fishing! Learn about these swift swimmers by visiting Granger Creek.
August 9 - Happy Birthday Smokey!
Celebrate Smokey’s 64th Birthday by learning about his message, his song, and the lands he wants us to protect.
August 16- Mammals
Did you know that there are mammals that can fly? Or that there are some that spend all their lives in water? Join us as we discover how humans are related to bats, squirrels and even beavers!
August 30- Creepy Crawlies
Insects are awesome! Learn why we shouldn’t be afraid of these creepy crawlies as we use special equipment to catch and observe them!
